My Winning Story

Los Altos in 60 Years

The year 2072 is the year that a futuristic Los Altos Library will be opened.  Let’s travel to July 4, 2072 to be the first person to see the grand opening of the library.  The building looks like a structure from a science fiction movie.   Fireworks pop out from its roof transforming into different shapes such as a dragons, ancient warriors battling each other, and George Washington leading his troops into victory.

As soon as the shiny golden metal doors open, hundreds of people stream through to get a look at the grand interior.  What they see amazed them! Robots after robots lined up to greet each person using their full name.  A robot gives me an e-paper that looks like a super thin ipad. It is an ipad!  Version 63! The ipad 63 acts like a guide. The robot tells me to press on the section that I would like to go to.  When I press  the fantasy section,  I am teleported to that section.  I pick out a book that I used to read 60 years ago.   As I open  Harry Potter and the Secret Chamber, Harry pops out like a hologram asking me if I would like to enter the Secret Chamber with him.  When I agree, he pulls me into a cave.  A monster lunged at him, but went through me.  He swung a sword and it died.  I closed the book and everything disappeared.

While the technology is exciting, I still want to read my old Harry Potter books.  The library has a section that serves the old people and allows them to touch the real books.  Real people serve them, too!  The library is going to have some major changes in the year 2072.

The Los Altos Historical Commission has scheduled its annual Margaret Thompson Historical Essay Contest for third- through sixth-graders.
In celebration of Los Altos’ 60th anniversary, the theme of this year’s contest is “Los Altos – 60 Years from Now.” The writing prompt:
“Take a journey into the future and describe a specific place – your school, your classroom, your house, your place of business, your church or synagogue, library or your history museum. Think about the places in Los Altos where you live, shop, go to school, get your books, play sports, etc. Choose one place about which to write. Write an essay about a specific place in Los Altos in which you imagine what that place will be like in 60 years.
• What will it look like?
• What will you do there?
• Describe what it would be like to visit this place.
• Paint a picture with words.
• Be creative and use your imagination.
• Draw a picture, if you wish, to accompany your essay.”
